Dr. Schneider recently joined the department of Family and Community Medicine at the UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas after chairing the department of Family and Community Medicine at Saint Louis University for nearly a decade. His focus is transforming the department, growing a strong research-focused program and innovative residency training program. In his early career, he was faculty at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio where he was professor and vice chairman of family and community medicine and co-director of the Center for Violence Prevention.
His career has focused on medical education. He served as director of medical student education and the family medicine residency director at UT developing innovative programs there. He is nationally recognized for his work with the AMA's National Advisory Council on Violence and Abuse and the Academy of Violence and Abuse. He is one of the founders of the Academy and served as the founding president and chair of the board of directors.
Dr. Schneider also served as chair of the American Academy of Family Physicians' Commission on Public Health, and as president of the Texas Academy of Family Physicians. He has received numerous awards, including the Texas Academy of Family Physicians Sam A. Nixon Leadership Award. His publications include book chapters, journal articles and reviews on family violence. He has been principal and co-principal investigator on research and training grants.
