Trauma-informed care changes lives -- for patients, families and entire communities. AVA Board Member, Ginger Meyer, is the Project Director for a trauma-based Fellowship Training Program at SIU Medicine. Ginger describes this opportunity to develop the behavioral health workforce as, “We are impacting generations of lives, because unprocessed trauma just repeats itself until it’s processed.” SIU School of Medicine offers a trauma-based behavioral health fellowship to prepare graduate students to recognize, understand and treat trauma, particularly in rural and medically underserved communities where access to care is limited. Over 10 years, the program has educated hundreds of students who now work in hospitals, private practice, community agencies and crisis response systems across the country.
