AVA is pleased to announce that Amy Binder, EdD, LPC, CPDT-KA, and Carlene Taylor, EdD, NCC, LPC, are presenting the closing plenary session titled “Paw and Order: The Valuable Role of Support Dogs in Forensic, Medical and Legal Settings” on Friday, October 16th.
This didactic presentation will explore the growing role of trained support and facility dogs in forensic, healthcare, and legal environments, with particular attention to their impact on witness well-being. Through current research, real-world case studies, and practice-based examples, participants will hear how support and facility dogs may facilitate emotional regulation, reduce situational distress, enhance engagement, and support communication during forensic interviews, court proceedings, and other high-stress interactions. The presentation will also address considerations for program implementation, including dog selection, handler qualifications, risk management, and evidence supporting the efficacy of animal-assisted services. The session will conclude with an interactive question-and-answer period, providing participants an opportunity to discuss practical applications, ethical considerations, and emerging trends in the field.
