The 2024 Global Health Summit on Violence and Abuse will provide a collegial environment for participants to network with colleagues and share advances in health education, advocacy, prevention, and research on trauma informed practice when caring for patients impacted by interpersonal, familial and community violence and abuse. Globally, we continue to grapple with the effects of trauma caused by bigotry, racism, the pandemic, political unrest, human trafficking, and more.
• Participants will be able to learn more about the AVA, including its mentoring, affinity groups, global development, and meet others with similar interests.
• The AVA provides mentoring and development opportunities for members to plan and develop their professional careers and research.
This Summit is intended for professionals, students, and trainees from multiple disciplines, including criminal justice, attorneys, counseling, dentistry, family therapy, medicine, nursing, nutrition, pharmacy, physical and occupational therapy, psychology, public health, and social work. AVA is particularly interested in providing an academic forum for those working to systematically address different forms of abuse in unique clinical settings, improve teaching in the health professions, advance scientific research, and inspire advocacy around violence and abuse.
AVA welcomes proposals for presentations that will foster an interprofessional exchange of solutions for the challenges of addressing violence and abuse in the health care setting. Reports of original clinical programs, research related to violence and/or abuse and health, or health professional education are particularly welcome. The research may pertain to clinical, economic, health systems, curricular, or faculty development issues in relation to local, national, and global efforts to address violence and abuse.
General Information and Instructions
Please note that the deadline for submission is May 24, 2024. Notification of Acceptance is June 30, 2024.
Submission Directions: Designate Brief Presentations or Breakout Sessions. List name(s), affiliations and contact information for presenter(s). Provide the Title of your presentation followed by an abstract of up to 500 words that includes the key area of interest, presentation description, learning objectives, explanation for what professional practice gap is addressed by the session or what need is met by the session.
Key Areas of Interest:
1. Health Professional Education and Training: Submissions should explore strategies for integrating education and training on recognizing, responding to, and preventing violence and abuse into healthcare curricula and professional development programs.
2. Advocacy and Policy Development: Abstracts should highlight advocacy efforts and policy initiatives aimed at promoting the rights of survivors, enhancing access to services, and strengthening legal frameworks to address violence and abuse globally.
3. Community Engagement and Empowerment: Presentations should highlight community-based initiatives, partnerships, and empowerment strategies that empower individuals and communities to prevent and respond to violence and abuse effectively.
4. Domestic Violence: Presentations delve into the issue of domestic violence and its implications in pediatric and adult healthcare settings from identification and screening, clinical management, to prevention and intervention.
Brief Presentations Purpose: These presentations should be designed to inform the attendees of new research, concepts, or approaches that advance the understanding and integration of these concepts into health care systems. These presentations will be grouped by topic and will be 15 minutes with 5 minutes for discussion. Several presentation session groups will run concurrently.
Breakout Sessions Purpose: To provide a more detailed discussion of new research, concepts or approaches that advance the understanding and integration of these concepts into health care systems. These presentations will be grouped by topic and will be 20 minutes with 10 minutes discussion. Several breakout groups will run concurrently.
